Yesterday morning we decided to go to “San Roque del Acebal”… just to see... We arrived, parked the car and started looking for a house called “ El Cotero”, which we knew belonged to my mother-in-law’s first cousins. We found a house called “ La Cotera”, knocked on the door...and nobody answered. We continued walking around until we found an old man cutting some grass. Carlos asked him about his aunts, and the man right away said that he knew them well, and that he knew they had spent all of August in San Roque, but thought they had already left for Oviedo, where they all live. We went looking for the house, but we weren’t sure which one it was, so nothing…yet. We asked another man who was tending for his cow ad a little calf. He gave us instructions, and we found the house! Carlos knocked on the door an, much to our surprise, there came out Aunt Valentina (“la Nena”) and her grand-niece Elena, who welcomed us warmly, invited us in…and the chatting began. Two hours later they took us to La Playa de Toró for lunch..and we kept talking and talking. From here we went to Llanes, and took a walk on the Paseo de San Pedro, saw the Playa de Ballota, and then back to the house for a little coffee. At around eight we say (for the nth time!) our “so longs”, and agreed to see each other again, so we could meet the rest of the family in Oviedo and, needless to say, to keep talking about whose children such and such are, who went to America when, who came back, who is the father, or the grandfather, or the daughter of….and so on and so forth! Learning about our past and living our present.

What an incredible first day!
